Our Project
In this project our group was tasked with making some sort of presentation about a disease caused by something going wrong in protein synthesis. The disease we chose to research and present was Cruetz-feldt jakob disease. We decided that our form of presentation was going to be a poster. We chose to put it on a poster because it was easy to transfer the information we researched and a good way to present to an audience. On our poster we answered many questions about the disease, explained what it is, and also explained how protein synthesis works.
Content Protein synthesis: Protein synthesis is the process in which a strand of DNA in the nucleus is transcribed into mRNA which then travels out of the nucleus to a ribosome then through the process of translation and protein folding resulting in a protein being formed. Diseases like CFJ disease are caused when there is a mess up in this process.
Codon/Anti-codon: A sequence formed by three nucleotides on mRNA that corresponds with an Anti-codon on the tRNA. Polymerase: Polymerase is an enzyme that is used during the process of transcription to split the DNA and create mRNA. Polypeptide chain: A chain of amino acids put together. Multiple polypeptide chains can form together to make a protein. Proteins: One of the macro molecules that creates enzymes as well as controlling work that takes place in the cell. Four protein folding structures: The four steps of protein synthesis are the primary, in which a polypeptide chain is formed of amino acids, the secondary, where the polypeptide chain folds based on hydrogen bonds into alpha helixs and beta sheets, the tertiary, where because some amino acids are hydrophobic and others are hydrophillic it folds into a precise shape that is needed, and finally the quaternary, in which nitrogen and hydrogen bonds are formed creating a working protein. It could be possible that CFJ disease is caused by a mistake in this process. Translation:Translation is when tRNA binds with mRNA based on their codons and anti-codons releasing amino acids that will form into a polypeptide chain. Transcription: Transcription is the process in which polymerase splits up the DNA then mRNA is formed along the DNA. Alpha helix: An alpha helix is the part of the protein structure that is in a helix shape. A misfolded protein has less alpha helixs Beta sheet: A beta sheet is a straight part of a protein. A misfolded protein has more beta sheets. Prion: A prion is a type of protein that is in your brain. CFJ disease is caused by a mistake in the prion. Amino Acids: Amino acids are the monomers that make up proteins. There are twenty amino acids. RNA (types): Some types of RNA are mRNA, tRNA, and rRNA. mRNA is messenger RNA which is the type of RNA that is formed during transcription. tRNA is transfer RNA which binds with mRNA to let out amino acids that will form a polypeptide chain. rRNA is ribosomal RNA which makes up ribosomes. |
ReflectionIn this project there were many things that I did well as well as many things that I could improve on. Two things that I did well were my work ethic and my empathy. I was almost never off task which allowed my group to work more efficiently and have a better final project. I also had great empathy. I was able to understand and listen to my teammates ideas causing us to all contribute to the project.
Two things that I could improve on were leadership and time management. I did not take that much of a leadership role which meant my ideas were not used as much as they would normally. I also could improve on my time management because even though I always worked hard I did not always work on important things. I used my time sometimes to work on the less important parts of the project causing the main parts to be a little more rushed. Overall I did well and our project ended up being a success. |
